Third-Generation IVF
Integrating reproductive medicine and genetic testing to explore individualized fertility plans
With the development of assisted reproductive medicine and embryo genetic testing technologies, some families with genetic risks or special reproductive medicine needs can understand fertility options suitable for them through more detailed medical assessments.
What is commonly referred to as third-generation IVF is an assisted reproductive technology that, on the basis of in vitro fertilization and embryo culture, carries out preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) according to clinical indications.
Japan Mizuho Reproductive Center integrates reproductive medicine, embryo laboratory, and genetics-related medical resources, focuses on individual differences and medical indications, and provides families with relevant needs with professional assessment and personalized medical planning support.
01 / Types of Testing
Different genetic tests correspond to different medical needs
Preimplantation genetic testing is not a single technology; it is divided into different types according to the purpose of testing.
PGT-A
Mainly used to assess chromosomal aneuploidy in embryos. Whether it is applicable needs to be judged in combination with age, previous reproductive history, and clinical conditions.
PGT-M
Mainly intended for families with clearly identified pathogenic gene variants and a risk of specific single-gene genetic disorders. Implementation conditions need to be determined in combination with genetic counseling and relevant testing.
PGT-SR
Mainly intended for patients carrying certain chromosomal structural rearrangements, such as balanced translocation carriers, and provides relevant testing support when medical indications are met.
Different testing methods have their own applicable scopes and limitations, and this does not mean that everyone undergoing in vitro fertilization treatment needs PGT.
02 / Treatment Planning
Developing a treatment pathway based on medical assessment
Before considering third-generation IVF, doctors usually need to understand the reproductive health status, chromosome and genetic test results, and previous treatment experience of both partners or the relevant patient.
Based on the assessment results, the medical team can discuss medical steps such as ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, in vitro fertilization, embryo culture, necessary genetic testing, and subsequent embryo transfer.
For families with complex reproductive problems or genetic risks, genetic counseling and multidisciplinary assessment are important components of developing an appropriate plan.
03 / Quality Management
Professional medical judgment and rigorous laboratory management
Embryo culture, biopsy, cryopreservation, and genetic testing all involve strict laboratory procedures and quality management. Test results need to be comprehensively interpreted in combination with embryo development, testing limitations, and personal medical history.
PGT cannot rule out all genetic diseases or pregnancy risks, nor can it guarantee embryo implantation, pregnancy, or live birth.
Mizuho adheres to a foundation of medical evidence and individual needs, respects clients' informed choices, and assists in connecting with medical resources that comply with relevant standards, making complex assisted reproductive decisions clearer, more prudent, and more orderly.
